Union expected to announce members at Royal Mail are in favour of national action after months of regional stoppages

A fresh wave of strikes by postal workers will be launched tomorrow ahead of an expected vote in favour of a national walkout in a bitter row over jobs, pay and services.

The Communication Workers Union is expected to announce on Thursday that 120,000 of its members at the Royal Mail will back a national strike following months of regional stoppages.

The union is embroiled in a long-running dispute, claiming that jobs are being lost, pay cut and services reduced under cost-saving measures being imposed by managers.

Royal Mail has insisted it is only pressing ahead with agreed modernisation of the business in the face of increased competition.

Action in the next few days includes 24-hour strikes in Peterborough, Bristol, Kilmarnock, Leeds, Nottingham and parts of London, which has been hit hardest by the recent stoppages.

The union will have to give seven days' notice of any national strikes, raising the threat of action before the end of the month.
